BD Diabetes Care app: Research + Design

The BD Diabetes Care app (formerly BD Briight) helps people with Type 2 Diabetes self manage their diabetes. When I started as the first in-house design/research hire for the newly formed Digital Health team, there was opportunity for design to be more consistent and user friendly within the app. Design and research also needed to be integrated into the agile process already working on the ground.

Through a great deal of collaboration at work, design and research became respected capabilities at BD Digital Health. As a collaborative, cross discipline team, we made improvements to the app due to insights we learned from people with Type 2 diabetes.

Goal Setting model

People with Type 2 diabetes (regardless of demographics or when they have been diagnosed, etc.) are sometimes in an endless loop of trigger moments to working towards a goal to emotional barriers leading to failure.

After a few months of research (both qualitative - in the field and remote - and quantitative), we discovered that in order for people with Type 2 diabetes to stay on track with their goals, there needed to be a better support system to catch them when failure struck.

We laid out a model for goal setting in the app based on this research.

On the left is what the app was when I started. On the right is where the app was when I left. We were not where we wanted to be, and had great plans for the future, but we were making iterative progress.
